Windows Subsystem for Linux is the tool that was released by Microsoft to get a full UNIX system inside of Windows. WSL opens up a bunch of new capabilities for developers using Windows, and is pretty fast for normal everyday web development tasks.
In this post, I cover some first impressions from my experience installing and running WSL2 (Windows Subsystem for Linux) in my dev workflow.
I haven’t done any exhaustive, scientific, or precise tests by any means. What I have found though is that WSL is about 5 times faster for everyday web development tasks like npm or yarn.
Also, hot reloading and working with create-react-app or the vue-cli is faster!
Read on for installation, getting started, gotchas, and specific timing on
npx create-react-app
What does WSL 2 bring?
Run npx create-react-app my-app; Expected Behavior. A basic react environment should be created. Actual Behavior. Npm install fails. Full output: PS npx create-react-app my-app npx: installed 67 in 9.444s Creating a new React app in C: pathto my-app. Installing packages. This might take a couple of minutes. Sometimes, the react-native app is not working or can’t be built after updating the version. Therefore, it’s recommended to execute the npm command below to lock the version when you develop the app with react-native. Npm config set save -exact =true execute React Native CLI command below to create react-native project.
This is the process I went through and the surprises I encountered while installing.
- Somewhere along the line you probably ran npm or installed Node using sudo. Make sure all the files and the directory itself are owned by your user, not root. If you're still stuck maybe try asking on Stack Overflow as this problem isn't specific to Create React App.
- React-dom: Not Found react-scripts: Not Found npmGlobalPackages: create-react-app: Not Found. Steps to Reproduce. Simply invoke npx create-react-app my-app. Expected Behavior. A new project my-app should be created. Actual Behavior $ npx create-react-app my-app npx: installed 63 in 2.206s Creating a new React app in /Users//WORK.
- The React + Redux RealWorld codebase uses create-react-app. Simply cloning the repo and running npm install will get everything set up, and running npm start will let you run the application live. In the next tutorial, we'll integrate Redux into an app that's scaffolded by create-react-app!
Installing WSL2 on Windows 10
Microsoft now has stable documentation on how to install WSL and update to WSL2.
To get up and running, follow the guide above through to the point where you set up a new linux distribution.
Checking if the Install Worked
The following command will show us what distros we have installed and what version they are on:
Installation Failure
If you already had Ubuntu installed on WSL 1, you may have to completely uninstall and reinstall it.
If your computer is having trouble running the update command (like my computer), then you may want to completely uninstall and reinstall your distro.
I went into the Windows settings under Apps > Apps and Features and uninstalled Ubuntu:
Then I made sure that the default version I wanted for all new installs was version 2:
Now we can go into the Windows Store to install it:
Once we’re installed, then we can check to be sure that version 2 was installed. Open up Powershell and run:
Running WSL
You can open up Windows Terminal and use the Ubuntu dropdown:
Alternatively you can open up either
cmd
or Powershell
and run:Gotchas with WSL 2
Speed when transferring between file systems is a little slow right now. That’s not a worry for me since I never transferred. I worked solely inside of my Windows files which were mounted into the Linux system.
Here’s a guide on User Experience changes from WSL 1 to WSL 2. The two big gotchas are:
- Move your files into the Linux file system instead of your Windows system
- You will need to access localhost apps like
[localhost:3000](http://localhost:3000)
via an IP address like192.168.28.2:3000
Move all files into Linux
To take advantage of all the new speed improvements in WSL 2, our files will need to be moved into the Linux filesystem.
The best way to figure out where to move your files is to find the home directory in Linux, then open it in Windows explorer. Run the following:
Notice the path as a Network path:
We can now move our files from our Windows folders into this new networked folder. We’ll be able to access it from our WSL and interact with it as if it were still in the same Windows files.
For instance, we can install Node using a tool like n and then run
npm start
to run a local server for let’s say a React app.Network Isn’t localhost Yet
When we create an app using create-react-app or the vue-cli, we will usually run a command like
yarn start
or yarn serve
to run a local server.Normally we would be able to check on our application right in our browser using
[localhost:3000](http://localhost:3000)
for React or [localhost:8080](http://localhost:8080)
for Vue.In the early stages of WSL 2, we can’t use localhost. We need to use an IP since Linux is inside a VM.
To access your application currently, we will use an IP.
Notice the
192.168.28.2:3000
. We’ll use that to access our application:A Quick Comparison and Speed Test
This entire exercise was to get a setup that was faster than the previous one. Let’s see if this setup is any faster!
I don’t have anything too scientific. I’ll go back and run more tests, but I was frustrated how long a new React app took WSL 1 to make.
For now, our test will be to run npx create-react-app my-new-app.
We’ll be comparing the following machines. I know this isn’t scientific at all. I wish I had more computers with similar setups. I wish I had done these speed tests before I upgraded to WSL 2. Oh well. We have what we have!
- My desktop machine (super powerful, more than the laptops for sure)
- Surface Book 2 15' i7
- MacBook Pro 15' 2015
Here are the numbers I got from running the test a few times on each platform.
- Surface Book 2 WSL 1: 257 seconds
- Surface Book 2 WSL 2: 52 seconds
- 2015 MacBook Pro: 45 seconds
- 2018 MacBook Pro: 38 seconds
While still not as fast as the latest MacBook Pro, WSL 2 has made significant improvements over WSL 1.
What’s Next?
We’ll keep getting updates and I’ll keep testing to see if performance is improving. I would love to get to a point where WSL 2 on Windows could be as fast as a 2018 MacBook Pro.
I love both Windows and Mac platforms and with WSL 2, my tools on both platforms has gotten even closer:
- Chrome
- VS Code
- Terminal
Happy coding!

You generally buy a MacBook because you want a quality laptop that’s easy-to-use and doesn’t suffer from bugs or hardware failures. So it’s truly disheartening to discover that there have been a slew of MacBook keyboard issues plaguing recent models.
Is your MacBook Pro keyboard not working? You’re not alone. Lots of users have been experiencing issues with their Apple butterfly keyboards as well.
Naturally, Apple is working to fix the problem in upcoming models of MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, but if you’ve bought one in the last few years, unfortunately, those fixes aren’t going to help you.

Why Is Mac Keyboard Not Working?
Before you can fix the problem, first you have to determine exactly what the problem is. There are a few possible issues that could lead to your MacBook keyboard not working.
One thing to note is that a MacBook keyboard isn’t like most other keyboards on the market. Instead of using a scissor-like mechanism, MacBooks feature a proprietary Apple butterfly-like keyboard with a slightly different design.
Ever wondered how Apple laptops are so slim? Part of that is the butterfly keyboard mechanism. Whereas most keyboards’ scissor mechanism provides tension on keys so that they click back into place once you finish typing, Apple designed a minimal switch as slim and elegant as a butterfly — hence the name.
Unfortunately, the butterfly keyboard is also just as fragile as a butterfly too. If even one spec of dust gets under a key and into the mechanism, it can lead to problems like a key repeating, sticking, or not registering hits at all.
It’s one thing if your Z key sticks occasionally. It’s another if your spacebar won’t work. Thus, fixing your MacBook keyboard can’t be put off for very long once it’s stopped working.
How do I fix a MacBook keyboard or MacBook Pro keyboard?
The short answer is: not you. The longer answer is an authorized Apple dealer will fix your MacBook Pro keyboard for free.
In some rare cases a blast of compressed air could clear the dust from the keyboard. Even though it won’t do the job for most, it’s worth trying since a can of air only costs a few dollars. But don’t expect salvation.
Apple has admitted that there’s a flaw with their design and as long as your MacBook is recognized as one of the afflicted models (if your keyboard isn’t working, it probably is) then all you have to do is take your laptop to an Apple Authorized Service Provider, Apple Retail Store, or Apple Repair Center, and they’ll handle your MacBook or MacBook Pro keyboard replacement.
It’s worth noting, however, that Apple created this service program after three class-action lawsuits. There were a lot of users with a Mac keyboard not working, and if they hadn’t taken action this fix would cost hundreds of dollars.

Part of the problem is that it isn’t simply a matter of replacing a single key on the butterfly keyboard — the entire MacBook keyboard has to be replaced, making it a fairly significant repair job. It can take up to five days before the shop is able to get the right parts and make the replacement.
Remember: Before taking your computer into the shop, always back up its most important data — even if you have to use a USB or Bluetooth keyboard to get it done.
MacBook or MacBook Pro trackpad not working?
The MacBook trackpad is one of the best on the market. Responsive and precise, it’s a dream to work with… at least, when it’s working correctly.
If you find your MacBook trackpad not working, there are a few steps you can take.
1. Turn it off and on again
It’s true that restarting something is an ongoing joke most of the time, but it’s also great advice. Try rebooting your MacBook and see if that clears up the issue.
While you’re at it, close the lid when you shut your laptop down as well. For some reason many Mac users have reported this solves their MacBook trackpad not working issue.
2. Disable the Force Click option
In some cases, if your MacBook Pro trackpad isn’t working, you can try to disable Force Click to fix the issue:
- Open System Preferences in your Applications folder
- Click Trackpad
- Navigate to the Point & Click tab
- Uncheck the Force Click option
Note: This fix will only work for MacBooks with 3D Touch, but it’s relatively easy to do and worth a shot.
3. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)
A lot of bugs and performance issues can be solved by resetting your Mac’s System Management Controller. There are two ways of doing so. For Macs with a non-removable battery:
- Shut down your MacBook
- Plug in your MagSafe adapter
- Press and hold down: Shift, Control, Option, and the power button
- If your MagSage adapter changes color, you’ve reset the SMC
If your MacBook has a removable battery:
- Shut down the laptop
- Remove your battery and MagSage adapter
- Hold the power button for 10 seconds
This simple reboot can take care of many of your Mac’s problems. It’ll reset some options like the time it takes for your MacBook to go to sleep when left idle, but it won’t change any truly important settings.
MacBook Pro keyboard and trackpad not working?
If both your MacBook keyboard and trackpad aren’t working, then there are a few possible problems that might be causing the issue: hardware and software. Here are a few more tips to test before taking your MacBook into an Authorized Apple Service Provider.
1. Delete .plist files
It’s possible that somewhere along the line your software settings have changed and contributed to keyboard and trackpad malfunction. Try setting them back to their factory defaults by deleting your .plist (or “property list”) files. How to remove apps from menu bar on mac.

- Reboot, but while the computer is booting press and hold ⌘ + Option + P + R until the gray screen appears
- Release the keys after you hear the reboot sound
3. Restore your Mac to an earlier version
If your keyboard or trackpad issues have just started, it’s possible that a recent change in software or settings has caused the problem. To fix it, just roll back your Mac a few saved backups:
- Restart your Mac
- While the system is rebooting, open the Recovery Tool by pressing ⌘ + R
